A breakthrough is needed to take full advantage of the potential qualities of the redox flow battery technology. Since most of the problems center around the extremely low pH needed to dissolve metals, Kemwatt is developing a chemistry based on organic molecules in alkaline or near neutral solutions.
Using organic molecules has a number of advantages. Thousands of different molecules are available, therefore it is possible to select them based on criteria such as electrochemical performance, solubility, price, recyclability… These molecules can already by mass-produced for other purposes, making them easily available. They can exchange several electrons per molecule, increasing the energy density. It is possible to design a system with one of these molecules and upgrade it later if a better molecule is found.
Based on years of scientific work and protected by several patents, Kemwatt’s technology is uniquely positioned to tackle the two main challenges of energy storage: cost and reliability.
